AI code editors are evolving so fast that my March rankings are already obsolete. Cursor just shipped their Agent mode update. Claude Code got background tasks. Windsurf released Wave 3. I retested all of them on the same 5 real projects.

The Test: 5 Real Client Projects, 5 AI Editors
I used each tool on identical tasks:
- Build a React dashboard from a Figma design
- Debug a production Node.js memory leak
- Migrate a Python 2 codebase to Python 3
- Create a REST API with auth from scratch
- Refactor a 10,000-line legacy PHP app
Results: April 2026 Rankings
๐ฅ Cursor (Agent Mode) โ 9.2/10
Cursor’s new Agent mode is a game-changer. It can now run terminal commands, read error logs, and fix issues autonomously. On the React dashboard task, it went from Figma screenshot to working app in 47 minutes. That’s insane.
Best for: Full-stack development, rapid prototyping

Price: $20/month (Pro) or $40/month (Business)
The catch: Burns through API credits fast on complex tasks. Budget $50-100/month extra for Claude/GPT usage.
๐ฅ Claude Code (CLI) โ 8.8/10
Claude Code’s background task feature is underrated. I set it to refactor the PHP legacy app overnight and woke up to a clean, tested, working codebase. No other tool does async coding this well.

Best for: Large refactors, background tasks, complex debugging
Price: $20/month (Claude Pro) + API costs
The catch: CLI-only means steeper learning curve. Not for visual learners.
๐ฅ GitHub Copilot (with Workspace) โ 8.1/10
Copilot’s Workspace feature makes it the best for team environments. The code suggestions are good (not great), but the collaboration features are unmatched.
Best for: Teams, VS Code loyalists, enterprise
Price: $19/month (Individual)
4th: Windsurf Wave 3 โ 7.6/10
Improved significantly but still behind Cursor. The Cascade feature is clever but occasionally goes off the rails on complex projects.
5th: Devin โ 6.8/10
Still too expensive at $500/month for what you get. It excels at simple, well-defined tasks but struggles with ambiguity. Read our full Devin review for details.
The Verdict
Cursor is the clear winner for April 2026. If you’re only going to pay for one AI code editor, make it Cursor Pro + Claude API credits. The Agent mode update puts it firmly ahead.
