Cognition’s Devin launched as the “first AI software engineer” and the internet lost its mind. At $500/month, it better be good. I put it through real-world tasks — building APIs, debugging legacy code, and deploying full-stack apps. Here’s the unfiltered truth.

What Devin Actually Does Well

Devin excels at repetitive scaffolding tasks. Need a CRUD API with authentication? It’ll spin one up in minutes. It handles boilerplate React components, database migrations, and basic DevOps configs surprisingly well.

The autonomous agent approach means you can give it a GitHub issue and walk away. It’ll create a branch, write code, run tests, and submit a PR. For junior-level tickets, it’s genuinely useful.

Where Devin Falls Apart

Complex debugging? Forget it. I gave Devin a race condition in a WebSocket handler and it spent 45 minutes going in circles before I stepped in. It also struggles with:

• Architecture decisions — it builds whatever you ask without questioning if it’s the right approach
