Cursor is the AI code editor everyone is talking about in 2026. After 30 days of using it as my primary editor, here is my honest verdict on whether it is worth switching from VS Code.
What Is Cursor?
Cursor is a fork of VS Code with deep AI integration built directly into the editor. It is not an extension or a plugin – the AI is woven into the core editing experience. You get inline code generation, a chat sidebar that understands your entire codebase, and an “agent mode” that can make multi-file changes autonomously.

- Hobby (Free): 2,000 completions/month, 50 slow premium requests. Enough to evaluate but not enough to rely on.
- Pro ($20/month): 500 fast premium requests, unlimited completions, unlimited slow requests. The sweet spot for most developers.
- Business ($40/user/month): Everything in Pro plus admin controls, centralized billing, and a privacy guarantee. Worth it for teams of 5+.
What I Loved
Codebase awareness is transformative. You can ask “where is the authentication middleware?” and Cursor searches your entire project, finds the relevant files, and explains the flow. No more grep-ing through thousands of files.
Tab completion feels like mind-reading. After a few days, Cursor learns your coding patterns. The autocomplete suggestions are not just syntactically correct – they match your style. It predicted entire function bodies that matched exactly what I was about to write.
Agent mode is genuinely useful. I described a bug (“the login form submits twice on slow connections”), and Cursor found the issue across 3 files, explained the race condition, and applied the fix. It took 45 seconds. Manual debugging would have taken 30 minutes.

What I Did Not Love
Premium request limits feel tight. 500 fast requests/month sounds generous until you realize that every agent mode interaction burns 3-5 requests. Heavy users will hit the cap by week 3.
Extension compatibility is 95%, not 100%. Most VS Code extensions work perfectly. A few niche ones had issues – my custom theme needed manual tweaking, and one testing extension crashed on launch. Not a dealbreaker, but worth checking your must-have extensions before committing.
The AI sometimes over-helps. When writing simple boilerplate, Cursor tries to refactor it into something “better.” Sometimes I just want a basic for loop, not an elegant functional chain. You learn to be specific in your prompts.

Cursor vs GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code
vs GitHub Copilot: Cursor wins on codebase understanding and multi-file edits. Copilot wins on single-line completions and GitHub integration. If you live in GitHub, Copilot might be enough. If you work on complex codebases, Cursor is better.
vs Claude Code: Different tools for different jobs. Claude Code is a CLI-first tool for autonomous coding tasks. Cursor is an IDE for augmented human coding. I use both – Claude Code for greenfield features, Cursor for everything else.
Verdict: 8.5/10
Cursor is the best AI code editor available in April 2026. The $20/month Pro plan pays for itself in saved debugging time within the first week. The only reason it does not get a 9 or 10 is the request limits and occasional over-eagerness of the AI.
Who should switch: Any developer spending more than 2 hours/day coding. The productivity gain is immediate and measurable.
Who should wait: Developers locked into very specific VS Code extension ecosystems. Check compatibility first.
Bottom line: I am not going back to vanilla VS Code. Cursor has permanently changed how I write code.
